Even though it was a cold and wet spring, delaying the start of our 2013 berry season, we are anticipating a bumper crop of strawberries this year. As of mid June, we expect that our first picking of the season will be around the end of the month to the beginning of July.

Strawberry Fields Forever!

We’ve had an exciting year with lots of new ‘news’ to share with you. The first is that we will be picking strawberries in a brand new field this year. We have 4 1/2 acres of new strawberries that were planted last April in new ground that is surrounded by a new deer fence. We are looking forward to that first bite of red, ripe, juicy strawberries.

In April we welcomed a new grandchild (our first!)–Olivia Grace born to Benjamin and Bethany. Olivia will be spending some time at Lindy’s Berries this summer helping in our selling shop. She’s got quite an extensive strawberry wardrobe and is all set to step into her position as the 4th generation of Lindy’s Berries grower.

Great Grandpa Phil with Olivia Grace.

Lindy – Our new black lab.

Last fall we added a new canine family member–Lindy–a female black labrador retriever. Lindy turned one year old in early June and this will be her first year helping at the farm. She joins Molly and Clyde as the official canine welcoming committee for Lindy’s Berries.

Strawberry prices this year will be the same as last year at the farm–Pick Your Own is $1.75 per pound and pre-picked (by order) will be $2.40 per pound. At our roadside stands a 4 quart pail of strawberries will be $15; quarts $5 and two-quarts $10. Our roadside stands are located in Spooner at Tony’s Riverside, Siren at Olsen & Son Drugstore, Cumberland at Louie’s Meats, Hayward at Hayward Amusement Park on Hwy. 27, and in Rice Lake at the Cedar Mall.

We’re looking forward to seeing all of you again this year.

We started picking strawberries this year on June 9th and ended the raspberry season on July 21–making 2012 one of the longest berry seasons we’ve had at Lindy’s Berries. Thank you to everyone that came out and picked or bought berries pre-picked and also those that stopped and purchased fruit from us at our roadside stands. We sincerely appreciate your business.

We are now busy preparing the fields for next year, including hoeing and setting runners on the new 4 1/2 acres of strawberries. We’re also pruning the raspberries, which involves cutting out all the canes that produced fruit this year and removing them from the field. In late fall we’ll bed down the strawberries with straw which protects them from the harsh winters that we are so ‘blessed’ to experience in northern Wisconsin. Next spring will be here before we know it and we’ll start the season with pruning the raspberries again, uncovering the strawberries, and planting another 4 to 5 acres of strawberries and possibly more raspberries.

Again, thanks for a great 2012 berry season and we’ll see you in 2013!

Raspberries are ready for picking! This will be a great week to visit the farm and pick-your-own raspberries. We provide you with pint containers for picking and our hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Raspberries are a great fruit to have in the freezer for winter baking and salads. Freezing raspberries is so easy–just pour them into a freezer bag and place in the freezer. No need to wash the berries or add sugar. They work great for muffins, pies, coffee cakes, gelatin salads, and smoothies all year round.

We charge $3.25 a pint if you pick your own raspberries and $4.25 a pint if we pick them for you. To ensure that we have berries available for you, please call ahead to place an order. We will have raspberries available at our roadside stands in Spooner, Siren, Hayward, and Cumberland. Give us a call at (715) 468-7635 for more information.
